I have always been a Certified Jologs among my college friends because of my love for the Philippine Cinema. I grew up watching Mara Clara and never missed an episode of Villa Quintana, in which my favourite actress, Donna Cruz, starred in. (Yes, you read right, DONNA CRUZ!) I have seen almost every Dolphy movie and I have watched “Ang Tanging Ina” more than 10x.
Even though I hate to admit it, TFC (The Filipino Channel) brings me closer to home. I watch the new ABS teleseryes (television series) religiously.. unless I have to sleep early for work the next day. I have been urging Rej to watch Rubi because the storyline is quite different from the usual “I’m-poor-therefore-I’m-helpless-and-needs-a-rich-man-to-protect-me-from-the-evil-rich-mother/sister/bestfriend” plot. The star, Rubi, is yes, poor but she’s also scheming and with the right amount of evil. Haha. Rej suggested that I make an entry comparing Singaporean Women and Filipino Women. I don’t know if I’m really the right person to do this because the only local woman I know here in Singapore is Iris. My other female colleagues – Christine is from Indonesia and Jenny is from Malaysia; so I will just discuss my fascination with the show instead!
Hilarious and winning lines from the show include:
Rubi to Aunt: “Maghanap ka na lang kasi ng Dirty Old Mayaman (DOM)!”
(Why don’t you just find yourself a DOM!)
Step-dad to Rubi: “Lika, bibilihan kita ng ballpen!”
(Let’s go, I’ll buy you a ballpen!)
Rubi to Alejandro (when he was returning her dress from the hospital, where A is a doctor): “Ano ba doc, remembrance ko na yan sayo!”
(No doctor, that’s my remembrance for you!)
The lines are not that funny here but when you watch the show, you can’t help but laugh at Rubi’s assertiveness to guys! Her character is really different from the usual “dalagang Pilipina” concept that we all grew up with. I guess that’s modern times catching up to you! I've never been much of a fan of Angelica Panganiban but when she started doing her impersonations of Kris Aquino, she started to grow on me. She's really funny!
Anyway, went to Lau Pa Sat with Rej and Jenny for lunch. I actually ate my baon before leaving the office because it might spoil if I don’t eat it. I just had dessert with them there.
Jenny bought an Indian Curry Set (I forgot to ask her which stall!) @ S$6.00 for the whole tray.
Rej had Happy V Chicken Joy with Fries @ S$6.00.
I had Almond Beancurd with Longgan @z S$1.70 per bowl. I don’t like beancurd but the almond extract really gives it a nice touch. Really good!
Tonight, I will be meeting Ayn, Nino and other Ateneo friends to watch Alice in Wonderland in 3D! I love Johnny Depp and I’m sure it’s going to be nice. They’re also inviting us to go to Pulau Ubin tomorrow. It’s the only rural community left in Singapore so it might be quite interesting. I will surely bring my camera! Will post pictures! :)
